The default settings feel like Spotify’s homepage: mix your own playlists and other playlists Spotify suggests based on your listening habits. There are also four shortcut buttons on the top of the device, which you can program with specific playlists or artists you listen to most often or skip with Spotify’s preset settings, which take you to a page of Spotify-recommended jams. You can then use the small round button at the bottom of the knob to make a selection. The knob on the right allows you to partially control the volume (you need to have your own stereo already fully turned on) and scroll through your Spotify catalog. The smarts come from its Spotify-specific voice assistant, which you can command via “Hey Spotify” to control your music. It’s a bit smaller and thinner than a smartphone, and its most notable feature is the large round knob on the right. The $90 Car Thing is a “smart player” that connects to your phone and car for hands-free music. Unfortunately, it failed on my car and my partner’s new car, which made me wonder what kind of car and stereo system it was meant to service. I expected this new gadget to be a convenient alternative to controlling the music in my car. My little console doesn’t make room for my phone, so I often toss it in the passenger seat, where it slides and swirls around as I drive.Įnter the Spotify Car Thing, a cell-phone-sized music player that connects to the Dash.
(It has an add-on CD player for goodness sake.) That means it’s not convenient (or safe) to pull up music on my phone when I’m on the road. But my car is old-from 1998, almost as old as mine-and it’s no real wonder it has a pristine sound system. When I drive down the California coast in my Jeep Cherokee, I love to jam on electronic lo-fi and the latest Harry Styles track.
